with Type 2 Diabetes

     September 2006

Part 2: Supporting Statements
  4.      Lifestyle Practice
  g.   Alcohol and other Substance Abuse

Providers should assess all patients with diabetes for alcohol and other substance use.  Providers should also counsel all patients on the appropriate use of alcohol:

· Recommend limiting alcoholic beverage to one serving per day for adult women and two servings per day for adult men.  [One serving = a 12 oz beer, 5 oz glass of wine, or 1½ oz distilled spirits (vodka, whiskey, gin, etc.)]
· Advise abstention from alcohol for women during pregnancy and for people with medical problems such as liver disease, pancreatitis, advanced neuropathy, severe hypertriglyceridemia, or alcohol abuse.
· Refer patients with alcohol or substance abuse to appropriate behavioral health staff or treatment program.
