Anemia is a common complication of diabetes. For many adults with diabetes, anemia can occur for several reasons. Anemia of chronic disease is associated with a number of disease states, especially if there is a significant inflammatory component (e.g., individuals with diabetes who also have metabolic syndrome). Anemia is commonly associated with CKD (as a result of erythropoietin deficiency) and nephropathy. Anemia can be expected in patients with stage 3 CKD. Recent reports suggest that anemia is common in patients with stage 2 CKD and normal serum creatinine. Providers should assess diabetes patients for anemia and, when identified, determine the cause. Appropriate and effective treatment of anemia will decrease morbidity, improve survival, and increase quality of life. Anemia also aggravates pre-existing cardiovascular disease. |
